What's scarier than Halloween?

You know what I find even scarier than ghosts and goblins? The fact that neither of our U.S. Senators has taken a position on the mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our food!

Jim and Tracy in DC

Last week I traveled to Washington, D.C. with one of our famers, Jim Riddle of Blue Fruit Farm, as part of a multi-state delegation including organic and conventional farmers, the Center for Food Safety, the Environmental Working Group, and the Just Label It campaign. Our mission was to speak with both our MN Senators, as well as other state senators on the Agriculture Committee, in advance of the October 21st Senate Ag Committee Hearing on Biotechnology and Genetically Engineered Foods—the first hearing of its kind in over 10 years! We delivered the message that WE, the People, have the right to know what's in our food and how it was produced.

Talk about scary! The hearing was not a debate over the merits and pitfalls of GMOs, it was just more rubber stamping of the status quo. The overall message from the representatives from the EPA, the FDA, the USDA (the so-called coordinated regulatory framework for GMOs), and other government witnesses who testified was that GMOs in our food are perfectly safe and that our right to know was mere consumer curiosity that does not warrant government regulation or mandatory labeling. I find this incredibly frightening!

The only hopeful part in the entire hearing (besides the fact that many of us still have a healthy lack of trust in government regulation over our food system) was the acknowledgement of the power of consumers and social media. This means they are hearing us! This means we need to keep the pressure on!

Please take a moment and call Senator Al Franken (202-224-5641) and Senator Amy Klobuchar (202-224-3244) and let them know that you expect them to stand up and protect our Right to Know what's in our food and support the mandatory labeling of GMO foods.
